Many desktop apps strategically use those corners, not to mention OSes. Why? Genuine question – I'm don't understand how it'd make much of a difference. This is a horrible idea in a production environment.
#DISPLAPERTURE FOR WINDOWS FOR MAC#
It actually makes me wonder if part of Big Sur’s redesign was in preparation for Mac displays with rounded corners, and they just haven’t been released yet. I even tried running TextEdit in a full-screen window with all toolbars and rulers hidden, and that still works fine because the content area is actually padded by about 5px anyway. The Mac’s menu bar is always occupying the top left and right corners anyway, or even if you have an app in full-screen mode, then the app’s toolbar occupies that space.Įven using BOMB to fake the rounded screen corners on Big Sur currently, I’ve had no problems with it, like a UI control or piece of text being cut off or anything like that. I really think it would work fine provided they designed the UI around it, like they have on the iPhone and iPad. That creates all kinds of issues such as not being able to have text all the way to the edges of the screen, and that for no purpose at all. I'll tell you this much: I'll never buy a computer with nonsense like rounded corners or a notch. But now, between Big Sur’s new look and the fact that other Apple devices have displays with actual rounded corners, I feel like the time is right to bring them back to the Mac.
#DISPLAPERTURE FOR WINDOWS MAC OS X#
The funny thing is, the Mac’s menu bar actually had rounded corners for the longest time – just drawn that way in pixels, since the displays themselves were (and still are) rectangular – but they were removed in Mac OS X Leopard. After setting the corner radii to match that of Big Sur’s windows (~9px), it just looks so much more natural to me than the squared corners – especially when you have a window in full-screen mode, since then the window corners match how they look when not in full screen. I downloaded Boring Old Menu Bar, which (among other things) has an option to make your menu bar and screen corners rounded. I’m actually surprised that they don’t already, but maybe it’s coming with the rumored redesign to the 14” and ARM 16” MacBook Pro. Call me crazy, but I think Macs should have rounded display corners like iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches do.
